Why Zarnesti?
Situated in the heart of Transylvania, Zarnesti is the main gateway in the north to the Piatra Craiului National Park.

Zarnesti was also the center of an international research project, the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project, whose aim was to create a model area in the surroundings of the Piatra Craiului National Park.

Prior to the 1989 revolution, Zarnesti was an industrial town with 2 large factories, one of which was an enormous ammunition factory. The official line was that this factory manufactured bicycles, so the local joke was that you could buy a decent medium-range bike there! On a more serious note, Zarnesti is living evidence of the disaster that the communist heritage means for people here.

Yet there is so much that makes this small town (25000 inhabitants) an extraordinary place to be: pristine, unspoiled forests, and farmers and shepherds who have learnt how to coexist with the wolves and bears here.

Zarnesti is surrounded by ancient woodlands. Just go for a hike and you can experience wilderness within a natural forest where the signs of wolves, bears, lynx, wild boar, deer and chamois can be found, or choose a walk through a deep limestone canyon, stopping to admire the high vertical limestone walls.

Zarnesti is the place to start exploring Romanian nature and wildlife, traditional rural life, or places of historical importance, depending on your interests while, at the same time, directly supporting nature conservation and the local economy.

Enjoy an active holiday. Small groups allow flexibility – learn a lot or just relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery, if you’re feeling energetic, go hiking, trekking or then again, you don’t have to move at all.

Tell us about your particular interests (walking through unspoilt forests, trekking, bird watching, reptiles, wildlife, culture, history) so we can make your trip unforgettable (aici sau la program?).

Our mission is to protect and conserve nature by offering comfortable and customizable eco-travel, with complete journey planning to the most natural destinations at minimal cost to the environment, promoting social and economic development of local communities and raising people’s environmental awareness.
